At Sport Sense, we are passionate about empowering young people through sports, so it was an absolute privilege to be invited by Active Suffolk and Sir John Leman High School to speak at their Young Leaders Training Day. A huge thank you to both organisations for hosting such an inspiring event and for giving us the opportunity to connect with the next generation of sports leaders.
During the day, I had the chance to share my personal journey in sports and coaching, reflecting on the lessons I’ve learned and the transformative impact a great coach can have. We explored the question: What makes a ‘good coach’?
Together with the students, we highlighted the importance of qualities like communication, adaptability, and organisation. But beyond that, we discussed how being a coach is more than teaching skills—it’s about being a mentor, a motivator, and sometimes, a role model who helps young people thrive on and off the court.
The students stepped up to the challenge with a series of interactive coaching activities designed to put their leadership skills to the test. Through challenges focused on verbal and non-verbal communication, organisational planning, and thinking on their feet, they demonstrated incredible enthusiasm and creativity. It was wonderful to see them begin to appreciate how these skills are not just essential for coaching but for life as well.
Of course, the day wasn’t all about hard work! There was plenty of fun and laughter, paired with thought-provoking conversations about the future of sports and leadership. It’s always energising to see young people so engaged and eager to make a difference in their communities.
To all the young leaders we met: we can’t wait to see how you take the skills you’ve learned and use them to inspire others. You are the future of sports, and your impact will undoubtedly go far beyond the field or court.
Thank you again to Active Suffolk and Sir John Leman High School for organising this fantastic event. It’s days like these that remind us why we do what we do at Sport Sense—helping to unlock potential and build a brighter future through sports.
Stay tuned for more updates on our work in the community!
